Parents,

Recently we have implemented a new phone notification system to communicate with parent/students of the district. A new feature of this system is a toll free number you can call to listen to recent messages in case you missed it. Please save 855-994-4242 in your phone. This is the number you’ll see when receiving a notification from the district (school news, updates, snow updates, etc). If you see a missed call from this number you can call it back and listen to the most recent messages. If you would like to change the phone number you receive notifications at you can update this information when filling out your students online school forms.

If you have any questions feel free to call the district.

Help Your Child Set Goals and Achieve Them

This entry was posted in News on by .

In school, we often use the term goals with your children. How can we help our students beat the odds and achieve their goals at a higher rate? Consider these ideas you can also support at home:

  1.      Make the goal specific. The target needs to be very clear for your child. Help him/her clearly articulate what it is they want to achieve. Instead of a goal to get better at reading, the goal could be to better understand what is being read.
  2.      Set a short timeframe. Many goals fail because the timeframe is too long. Set small, specific timeframes (2-3 weeks) that can be more easily monitored.
  3.      Make a plan. Help your child figure out actions they can take to reach their goal. How will you better understand what you are reading? Will you write a summary after a certain number of pages? Will you ask questions as you read?
  4.      Adjust the goal. There is nothing wrong with your child adjusting his/her goals. Adjusting will be more successful than quitting.

5.      Celebrate. Celebrate the small successes like sticking to the goal’s steps. There is something about acknowledging progress, even small progress, that propels us to keep at it and work toward the next small step along the road of attaining a goal.

Three Keys to Success

This entry was posted in News on by .

East Guernsey faculty and staff regularly emphasize three keys to succeeding throughout school: attendance, work ethic and extra participation. Students who show up on time, work hard and get involved will certainly get the most out of their middle school and high school years. This is not to say that they will not face challenges. School should be challenging to adequately prepare students for life after graduation. Students who work on these three keys, however, will find the strength within and the resources around them necessary to achieve in the face of obstacles. These keys not only help students to find academic success but lifelong fulfillment as well.

Partnership with the Nutrition Group Encourages Healthy Students

It is important for kids to get a healthy, balanced diet for proper growth and development. At East Guernsey Local School District, a new partnership with The Nutrition Group will encourage just that. As the new food service managing company, The Nutrition Group has already enhanced the current food program at our schools – monthly menus now feature an assortment of entrée selections with a variety of hot and cold choices, low-fat options, grab-n-go salads and wraps, and healthy snack and beverage choices.

In addition to feeding children their daily recommended nutrients as directed by the National School Lunch Program, Youth Advisory Councils have been assembled to promote communication between students and staff, giving everyone the opportunity to have a hand in the direction of the cafeteria program. The Nutrition Group also offer student programs about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle through colorful signs in the serving lines and interactive classroom lessons that make learning about nutrition fun.

Did you know there are specific food guidelines that schools need to meet on a daily basis? Five food groups are offered to students daily, and a variety of choices are always available. Students are offered one serving of meat, grains, fruit, vegetables and milk daily. From these five groups, students must choose three components to make up a complete, reimbursable meal as part of the National School Lunch Program. A variety of choices enables students to choose their favorite items to make lunch their way… the healthy way!
